Why Spring is the Most Popular Time for Weddings in Canberra – and How to Maximise the Blooms

Thinking of a spring wedding? You’re not alone — it’s Canberra’s most popular wedding season (and for good reason). From lush peonies to dreamy sweet peas, this guide covers the best in-season blooms, expert florist tips, and how to get the most from your wedding flowers.

There’s something undeniably magical about spring in Canberra.

The air is soft, the gardens are blooming, and the whole city feels like it’s waking up in full colour. It’s no wonder that spring (September to November) is the most sought-after season for weddings in Canberra and surrounding areas like Murumbateman, Gundaroo and Braidwood.

But with peak season popularity comes peak demand, especially when it comes to flowers. In this guide, we’ll explore why spring weddings are such a favourite and how you can make the most of the gorgeous blooms available during this time of year.

Why Spring Is So Popular for Weddings in Canberra

Canberra shines in spring. Here's why so many couples say "I do" during these months:

  • Ideal weather: Warm days, cool evenings, and (usually) less rain – perfect for outdoor ceremonies and golden-hour photos.

  • Floral abundance: Spring brings an explosion of colour and variety, making it a dream season for fresh, romantic wedding flowers.

  • Iconic scenery: From Floriade to blooming bushland and heritage gardens, the backdrop practically builds itself.

  • Natural light: Longer days and gentle sunshine are a photographer’s dream, enhancing everything from the dress to your bouquet.

Best Spring Flowers for Weddings in Canberra

Spring is bursting with some of the most beloved wedding blooms. Here are some of our favourites available:

Peonies- Romantic and lush with ruffled petals that steal the show. Their season is short (Oct–Nov), and demand is high, so booking early is advised if these beauties are on your wishlist!

Ranunculus- Whimsical and full of layers, these blooms come in a dreamy range of colours. A versatile favourite for both bouquets and buttonholes.

Sweet Pea- Delicate and oh-so-fragrant, Sweet Peas bring a soft, garden feel to any design. Available in pastel and vibrant shades, they’re a springtime classic.

Tulips- Timeless and elegant, tulips can lean modern or traditional depending on your styling. Their clean lines and variety of hues make them a popular pick.

Freesia- Petite and budget-friendly, Freesias add sweetness and scent to your arrangements. Their light fragrance and dainty form make them perfect filler blooms.

Iceland Poppies- Light, playful, and full of personality, Iceland Poppies bring movement, texture, and a soft wildflower feel to spring arrangements.

Roses- are always a classic. Whether you're drawn to the luxe, reflexed look of premium imported Colombian roses, the fluffy, peony-like charm of garden roses, or the naturally scented beauty of local varieties, there’s a rose for every aesthetic. Imported blooms often offer structure and size, while Australian-grown roses can surprise you with their unique fragrance and delicate character.

Native Blooms- Earthy, sculptural, and uniquely Australian. Spring brings stunning options like flannel flower, waratah, and tea tree, ideal for adding texture and a local touch to your florals.

How to Make the Most of Spring Blooms

Want your spring flowers to truly shine? Here’s how to make the most of the season’s natural beauty:

Be flexible

Mother Nature has her own timeline. Weather and availability can shift, but your florist can offer stunning seasonal substitutes that stay true to your style.

Trust your florist’s eye

We know what’s blooming at its best the week of your wedding. Lean into our experience to create designs that are both beautiful and long-lasting.

Embrace spring foliage

Think flowering branches, wild vines, soft herbs, and new-season greenery. Foliage adds movement, depth, and softness, making arrangements feel natural and effortless.

Let the season lead your palette

Pastels, soft neutrals, pops of coral, and dusty hues all pair beautifully with spring. Garden-style arrangements, airy bouquets, and textured floral moments work beautifully this time of year.

Spring Wedding Colour Palette Inspo

If you’re not sure where to start with colours, try one of these fresh spring combinations:

  • Blush, ivory & apricot – classic, romantic, and flattering on everyone

  • Toffee, dusty lavender & white – elegant with a modern twist

  • Peach, raspberry & coral – bold and joyful

  • Soft pink, lemon & sage – whimsical and fresh

Expert Tips from a Canberra Wedding Florist

Here’s what I recommend as someone who’s bloomed more than a few spring love stories:

Book early

It is peak season for weddings, and there are logistically only so many we can say yes to per date, especially if you're dreaming of peonies or premium natives. These blooms are high in demand and can be limited in availability during peak wedding season. Leaving it to the last minute may mean we cannot pre-order with growers.

Have a wishlist, not a must-have list

Bring your inspiration, but stay open. This gives your florist flexibility to choose the freshest, most beautiful in-season blooms available that week.

Don’t skip the scent

Spring is the season for fragrance. Blooms like sweet pea, freesia, and jasmine add an extra sensory layer to your day that guests will always remember.

In Bloom & In Love

Spring is the season of fresh starts, and there’s no better time to begin your next chapter together.
